General Job Description:
Lancaster County, South Carolina is one of the fastest growing counties in South Carolina and the Charlotte, NC Metropolitan Area. The County is currently undergoing a transformative process through the ongoing development of a new Comprehensive Plan and Unified
Development Ordinance (UDO), which the Deputy Director will have an oversight role in. The Planning and Zoning Department is seeking a Deputy Director who is adept at working in a dynamic environment that includes both urban and rural planning elements. Working in the Planning and Zoning Department is a collaborative process that requires camaraderie with teammates. Lancaster County is willing to offer a very competitive salary in order to hire the most qualified candidates.
Minimum Education and Training:
Typical qualifications for the Deputy Planning Director may include, but are not limited to the following.
Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Geography, or related field
Minimum eight-years of experience as a planner including prior supervisory experience
Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite
AICP certification or ability to obtain within one year of employment
Thorough understanding of the principals and practices of current, long range, and transportation planning
Collaborative mindset and conflict resolution skills
Ability to form effective relationships with internal and external customers
Considerable experience in employee supervision and mentoring
Effective communication skills: oral, written, and public presentations
Considerable experience in problem-solving through critical analysis
