Job Description

The Town of Hilton Head Island is seeking a passionate, innovative, and dedicated Town Architect focusing on architecture and design to join our team. In your role as Town Architect, you’ll serve as an ambassador of design quality, ensuring that all developments and public projects reflect the historical, ecological, and cultural integrity of Hilton Head Island. Your impact will be evident in the harmony between architecture and landscape, between the built and the natural environments. This position will also perform technical document reviews with emphasis on architectural design aesthetics and its adherence with Town guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as coordinator of the Design Review Board; develops agenda items, reviews and presents projects which includes preparing staff comments related to compliance with the Design Guide; provides state-mandated training for Board members;
  • Monitors project compliance, including making presentations to various boards and commissions including Town Council;
  • Provides design assistance and input on pop-up projects from the Assistant Community Development Director, Assistant Town Manager-Community Development or Town Manager;
  • Serves as the Town’s liaison between developers and designers as part of public/private partnerships;
  • Reviews and provides feedback on DPRs (Development Plan Review), Pre-Applications, and other permits as requested; coordinates staff activities involving the Town’s Design Review Board;
  • Collaborate with local Architects and Designers while challenging them to create sustainable projects that is in keeping with the Town’s vision of true Lowcountry Architecture;
  • Provides design assistance to applicants and other members of the public;
  • Impacts the architectural language of adaptive reuse of structures through plan reviews;
  • Drafts in-house site design concepts for development plan review; and
  • Responds to questions from applicants and general public.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in planning or related field
  • Six (6) years of progressively responsible work in architecture, landscape architecture or urban planning; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Licensed Architect or Landscape Architect
  • Valid driver’s license
