Job Summary
Georgetown County is seeking an advanced-level professional for the position of Senior Planner. This position provides a meaningful opportunity to be instrumental in the update of the County’s Comprehensive Plan, draft revisions to codes and regulations, develop special area plans and review development proposals. The Senior Planner will perform a variety of planning functions requiring the application of well-developed verbal, graphic, written and analytical skills, as well as knowledge and skills in land use, zoning, transportation and site plan review.

Job Responsibilities
Multi-disciplinary Collaboration and Leadership: Candidates will work in a collaborative environment that includes property owners, developers, engineers, architects, and other planners as well as representatives from other County departments. Excellent interpersonal skills are required for facilitating relationships with both internal and public exchanges;
Communication: The position requires excellent communication skills in a variety of settings including presentations to elected officials and board members and communication with the public including applicants and community groups. Effective verbal, written and graphic communication are important for this position. The ability to prepare and present reports for technical or administrative purposes is a must as is the use of demographic information, GIS and other relevant data as necessary to recommend policy changes and recommendations. The candidate must be able to present complex and technical information in a clear and concise manner to various groups;
Research: Analytical and research skills are required including attention to detail. Conducts technical research, studies and prepares statistical reports for presentation to other County staff as well as Planning Commission and County Council;
Awareness of planning principles, current practices, information sources and trends in the field of planning. Keeps informed of current trends in the planning field, including legislation, court rulings and professional practices and techniques;
Works under limited supervision of Director of Planning and Code Enforcement. Must be able to work independently, exercise professional judgement and problem solving and be able to prioritize multiple work assignments. May provide limited supervision of subordinate staff in performing operational duties or special projects;
Leads or assists with Comprehensive Plan updates, code amendments and other long-range planning studies. Conducts research and prepares statistical reports needed for such plan updates. Presents proposed amendments to public, appointed and elected officials for approval;
Assists with grants for infrastructure and community development which may include writing, monitoring and reporting as needed;
Works in regional program areas specifically dealing with transportation and community development plans and projects;
Performs current planning functions such as rezonings, site plan reviews, plat reviews, etc;
Provides customer assistance and responds to informational requests;
Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in planning or a closely related field with five years’ experience in local government planning, or any equivalent combination of educational or work experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. High level of computer skills and a valid SC Driver’s License required.
