Ensures compliance with development and permitting requirements to prevent improper development, protect land values, protect the City’s Comprehensive Plan, and ensure the safety of residents. Performs compliance inspections on sites.

Administers and enforces provisions of the Development Standards Ordinance. Amends Development Standards Ordinance.

Assists with interpretation of the zoning ordinance. Evaluates zoning requests.

Analyzes and reviews variances and related land development requests.

Monitors major land acquisitions and proposed developments.

Approves plats before they are recorded.

Evaluates land use proposals for conformity to established plans and ordinances. Evaluate proposals’ development impact as they relate to the adopted plans of the City and make recommendations.

Performs site inspections as needed to determine easements, buffers, and other issues.

Evaluates environmental information and recommends mitigation measures to reduce adverse impacts of development.

Coordinates specialized utility plans with service providers.

Provides technical and professional advice. Makes presentations to supervisors, boards, commissions, civic groups, and the general public. Responds to citizens inquiring about local planning and zoning regulations and ordinances.

Provides information on land use applications, ordinances, codes, plans and related planning programs, services or regulations to architects, engineers, developers, contractors, owners, community groups, and concerned citizens.

Assists with the interpretation of ordinances, regulations, and other codes.   Provides information for documents such as the Annual Report, Annual Report for the people, and brochures.

Promotes improved relations with the public by making presentations regarding City activities and issues to various groups and organizations. Works closely with the public regarding land use, zoning, and development issues.

Acts as public liaison for special projects.

Prepares staff reports and makes presentations to various boards and commissions.   Assists other planning staff members as needed.

Essential Skills and Experience 

Requires Bachelor’s degree or education and training equivalent to four years of college education in land-use planning, urban planning, public administration or any equivalent combination of education and experience or a closely related field.

Must possess a valid state driver’s license.

Requires two years of experience in zoning enforcement Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills with ability to develop strong professional working relationships across all levels of the organization.

Ability to speak compound sentences using normal grammar and word form.

Ability to plan effectively, set priorities, make sound decisions, and to manage/complete multi-faceted projects in conjunction with normal activity.
