2016 Joint GPA / SCAPA Fall Conference

The Georgia Planning Association (GPA) and South Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association (SCAPA) are pleased to announce our joint Fall 2016 Conference scheduled for Sept. 21 – 23, 2016 at the Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center (2 Tenth Street, Augusta, GA).

The 2016 Joint GPA-SCAPA Fall Conference is shaping up to be a great one!  Thank you to all of you who submitted session proposals.  We received great ones from both Georgia and South Carolina, and are pleased to be offering a wide variety of breakout sessions, as well as mobile workshops which will showcase innovative planning in and around Augusta.  If you are taking the Comprehensive Planning Exam in November, you don’t want to miss the AICP Review Courses in Planning History and Theory; Public Participation and Social Justice; and Planning Law.  Need Ethics and Law CM credits?  We have you covered with sessions on both topics!

All sessions have been approved for Certification Maintenance (CM) credits. AICP CM Credits are also eligible for CNU-A credits.  We have also submitted the sessions/conference for Landscape Architecture Continuing Education System (LA CES) credits.

GPA and SCAPA Welcome Glenn Larson, AICP as Joint Fall Conference Keynote Speaker

We are pleased to have Glenn Larson, President-Elect of the American Institute of Certified Planners, joining us as our keynote speaker on Thursday morning! He will be speaking about the many initiatives APA and AICP are currently advancing to shape the course of planning, and to help planners establish, grow, and excel in their careers. Mr. Larson will highlight new opportunities, tools, and resources available to APA and AICP members.

Why Should You Attend?

With a little help from our friends at the Augusta CVB, the top 10 reasons to visit Augusta and attend the fall conference are:

  1. Invigorate your career – Informative conference sessions, mobile workshops, and hundreds of your fellow planners from throughout Georgia and South Carolina will be there!
  2. Walkability – The convention center is ideally located along the Savannah River in downtown Augusta. You can walk from the convention center to restaurants, museums, shopping, and nightlife. Choose from more than 30 locally owned restaurant choices in a three-block area!
  3. Southern Hospitality – When you arrive in Augusta, you can expect folks to be welcoming and friendly.
  4. Pimento Cheeseburgers – Garden and Gun just listed Farmhaus Burgers as a top burger spot in the state. Try their pimento cheeseburger for a little taste of something different.
  5. Godfather of Soul – James Brown honed his skills on the streets of Augusta. Have your picture taken with his life size statue or visit his exhibit in the Augusta Museum of History.
  6. Augusta Canal National Heritage Area – The Augusta Canal is just one of 18 national heritage areas. The canal offers kayaking, walking trails, and the Discovery Center museum.
  7. It’s Cheap – We know some people would prefer we say “affordable.” But sometimes it is just great to get cheap rates and cheap eats. The quality is always there, but it is great to be affordable, too!
  8. Sitting Pretty – Augusta is a great central location for a joint state conference, with easy access off I-20.
  9. The BOMB – is it too early to talk about food again? Never. Stop by Nacho Mama’s for the bomb burrito. That will be all you need for the rest of the day. Promise.
  10. AICP CM Credits – Need we say more?
